Acne affects the pores of the skin, canals through which a hair follicle passes. Glands known as sebaceous glands produce sebum, a mixture of oil and waxes, which lubricate the skin and prevents water loss. They are mostly found on face, back, chest and shoulders. Acne affects the areas of skin that have sebaceous glands.

Acne is most common at puberty because of increased male sex hormone Testosterone. Although men have higher levels of testosterone than women during puberty there is an increase of testosterone in both sexes, which makes girls just as susceptible to acne. Testosterone causes sebaceous glands to produce more sebum. In addition, the cells that line the skin pore produce more keratin. Increased level of both sebum and keratin can lead to pore blockage and formation of blackhead. With the pore blocked, bacteria can over grow and release enzymes that break down sebum and promote inflammation. This form what is known as whitehead or pimple.


  • Eliminate all sugars from the diet.
  • Do not eat foods containing trans fatty acids such as milk, milk products and margarine.
  • Avoid food high in iodized salt.
  • Avoid use of greasy creams or cosmetics
  • Wash pillow regularly in chemical free detergents.


  • Consume Vitamin C 500-1000MG two times daily
  • Vitamin E 200-400IU daily
  • Flaxseed oil 1 Tablespoon daily
  • Chromium 400MCG daily
  • Zinc 45MG daily.
